news the board was given included being told worker's compensation was "dropped" onto school districts this year. In Gurdon, this means an additional cost of about $25,000 annually. Prior to this year, the state picked up the tab.

Additionally, it cost the school $2,138 to have Arkla Gas give pressure checks on the gas lines. Smithson said the law requires proof of testing.

The gas line to the band room, home economics building and agri building had to be replaced, he told the board, because the tests revealed they wouldn't hold the pressure.

He told the board two bids were received for the canopy to cover the sidewalks. The district will be purchasing the equipment and doing the installation with its maintenance workers.

Hill and Cox submitted a bid of $13,1737.38, while Metal Mart of Mayflower's bid was $13,354.65.

The bids include about 900 feet of metal, which will tie in the Cabe building to the main school structure, the vocational building and the cafetorium.

He said Metal Mart's bid includes blue trim on the awning. This color, the board was told, is close to the color blue on the school roofs.

The board agreed to go with the Metal Mart bid.

Two more children will be added to the roster in the Gurdon school system. The children's mother had asked for the transfer out of the Arkadelphia system to Gurdon schools.

This was done because the family lives in Curtis.

Arkadelphia's district had no problem with granting the transfer out, and Gurdon's board agreed to accept the students.

When the meeting adjourned, board president presented Smithson with a plaque in recognition of the work he's done on the new Gurdon High School.
