Cubettes Remain Perfect In Play; Win Division At Blevins Tournament

Published Wednesday, December 6, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Nevada's junior girls opened the Blevins Junior Invitational Tournament with a resounding win over Delight Mon., Nov. 27.

However, they fell to a buzz saw team in the finals as the Prescott Cubettes went home with the championship.

In the first game, however, the Lady Jays thumped Delight's Lady Bulldogs 49-11.

The Nevada squad opened the contest with a 12-0 lead at the end of the first six minutes and held a commanding 28-2 advantage at intermission. The contest was out of reach by the end of the third period as the Lady Jays led 42-8.

Romana Evans led the Lady Jays with 14 points. She was followed by Jackie House's 10. Shiketa Henry contributed eight in the victory.

The Lady Jays shot less than 50 percent from the free throw line as they only connected on three of eight shots.

The Lady 'Pups were paced by House's seven.

The Delight team never made a trip to the charity stripe.

The trip to the finals, though, was a rough one.

Both squads entered with perfect records on the season. Each knew only one would leave unblemished.

It wasn't Nevada.

The Cubettes posted a 34-25 win to take the title in the hard-fought contest.

Nevada opened the game with a 7-6 lead at the end of one, but trailed 23-13 by halftime as the Prescott offense came to life.

The Cubette defense was also playing hard-nosed ball as it only allowed Nevada to score four points in the third stanza, while Prescott's offense added eight more to its total.

Evans again was Nevada's leading scorer with 10 points. T. Lambert added seven.

Free throws were a problem for the Lady Jays as they were cold from the stripe. The team was only able to collect three of 14 chances.

The tandem of Tracy Graham and Staci Stockton proved to be too much, once again as the two led the Cubettes. Stockton poured in 14 points, while Graham canned 10.

The Cubettes were four of nine from the charity stripe as they took the Blevins Championship.
