Published Wednesday, December 6, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Nevada's junior boys brought home the prestigious Blevins Junior Tournament Championship with a double-overtime win over Gurdon's Go-Devils Saturday.

However, the Jays opened the tourney with a win over Delight's junior Bulldogs. The final score was 36-25 for the Jays.

The Nevada squad took control from the opening tip as they posted a 15-8 lead in the first six minutes and sped to a 19-10 lead at the half. The Jays blew the game open in the third quarter as they pulled away 30-14 and cruised to the victory.

Julius Gulley led the attack with nine points while Lamar Haynie netted eight in the win.

The Jays held their own at the free throw line as they hit five of 10 attempts.

Shawn Piggee was Delight's offense as he scored 22 of the team's 25 points.

The 'Pups never saw the free throw line in the contest.

The finals were worth the price of admission as the Jays and Go-Devils locked horns in a bloodbath.

Both teams were up and down the court, each battling for supremacy and bragging rights in the tourney.

Neither team, though, could put the other away when it built a lead.

The contest opened with the Jays taking a 14-6 lead. The Go-Devils, however, fought back to go to the lockers with a 22-19 halftime advantage.

The Gurdon troops continued holding the lead at 36-24 by the end of the third and appeared to be on their way to the title.

However, Glyndon Franklin charged his boys up in the final six minutes, as they clawed their way to a 41-41 tie as the buzzer sounded ending regulation play. The Jays outscored Gurdon 15-5 in the fourth quarter.

The teams stood toe-to-toe in the first overtime period, slugging it out like two heavyweight boxers trading punches.

When the buzzer went off ending the three minute extra period, both teams had put five more points on their totals.

This lead to the second OT period. For two-and-a-half minutes it was an even outing as the teams had upped the score to 50-50.

With 30 seconds left, though, Gurdon's team committed two fatal turnovers which led to four points ofthe five point win. A free throw helped seal the win for Nevada.

Gulley dominated the offense for Nevada with 28 points as No. 20 was all over the court. Derrick Bell netted nine for the Jays. Bell and Gulley each hit a three-pointer in the game.

However, the problem area in the contest was the charity stripe. Nevada's boys had trouble as they only hit nine of 22 tries.

Terry Cornish paced Gurdon's purple and gold attack with 23. Mixon added 11 for Gurdon, while Charles sank 10.

The Go-Devils shot well from the line, but were unable to convert during crunch time. The team, overall, hit eight of 14 tries.
