Military NewsPublished Wednesday, June 30, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneNavy Airman Carlos Welch, son of Ivory and Kay Curry of 505 E. Fifth St., Prescott, is halfway through a three-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan. Welch and fellow sailors are participating in Operation Southern Watch, enforcing U.N. resolutions levied against Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War. During the operation they are patrolling the no-fly zone over Southern Iraq and prohibiting the flow of illicit contraband to and from Iraq. During the first half of the deployment Welch's ship made port visits to Bahrain and Jebel Ali of the United Arab Emirates. While in port Welch had the opportunity to participate in community relations projects. Aircraft carriers, such as USS Kitty Hawk, are forward deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and, if deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful weapons available. The 1997 graduate of Prescott High School joined the navy in July 1997. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
