Wolverettes 9-4; 0-1 In ConferencePublished Wednesday, December 20, 1995 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's Wolverettes have posted a 9-4 record so far on the season, but find themselves 0-1 in league play. The Wolverettes, Monday, Dec. 11, escaped Blevins' Lady Hornets with a 63-52 win, in a game coach Cecily Butler calls the best they've played all year. After trailing 12-11 at the end of the first period, the Wolverettes rebounded to take a 25-23 lead at the half. The Prescott offensive attack came alive in the third as they pulled to a 41-34 advantage, and outscored Blevins 22-18 in the final eight minutes. Gladys Gulley led the Prescott crew with 22 points, with Laura Culpepper scorching the nets for 20. Sweat paced the Lady Hornets with 20. Gulley pulled down 13 boards, while Ashley Stewart yanked down nine. Leslie Hines had four steals, while Culpepper had six assists. The Wolverettes canned 13 of 19 free throws, while Blevins was 12 of 17. Prior to the Blevins game, the Wolverettes were whipped 88-32 by the steamroller from Caddo Hills in the finals of the Murfreesboro Tournament. Of course, this game was played the night before the Curley Wolf football team played for the class AA state championship. In the semifinal game, the Wolverettes clipped Delight 56-52. Prescott opened the contest with a 14-11 lead after one, but trailed 25-24 at the break. The Wolverettes responded in the second half, taking a 44-41 lead at the end of the third period and holding on for the win. Gulley led the team with 16 points, while Hines netted 15 and Jessica Hildebrand added 14. Delight's Norton led all scorers with 22. The Wolverettes were 11 of 16 from the charity stripe, while Delight was 10 of 23. Culpepper was seven of eight from the line and pulled down eight boards. Gulley ripped six rebounds and Hines had four assists. Culpepper had the hot hand when the Wolverettes dumped Saratoga 73-63 on Dec. 8. She scored 28 points in that game and had nine rebounds. The two squads were deadlocked at 10-10 when the buzzer sounded ending the first quarter, but Prescott held a 28-22 lead at the half. The Wolverettes widened the gap at 47-40 at the end of three. Following Culpepper, Gulley had 16 points and 12 boards, while 14 was the magic number for Stewart in points and rebounds. Seventeen was the number of choice for the Wolverettes and Lady Bulldogs from the stripe. Prescott hit 17 of 27, while Saratoga netted 17 of 29. In the opening round of the Murfreesboro tourney, the Wolverettes manhandled Hatfield 63-38, with Butler clearing the bench to get all of her players some vital minutes. Prescott raced to a 16-9 first quarter lead and was up 33-19 at the break. The Wolverettes continued pulling away in the third as they led 51-28. Culpepper scorched the nylon for 21, pulling down eight boards, while Gulley added 10. Foster led Hatfield with 16, while Long added 14. The Wolverettes connected on 14 of 19 from the free throw line, while Hatfield shot 16 of 31. On Nov. 28, the Wolverettes clipped nemesis Hope 63-62, with senior Stewart stepping forward and taking the last shot with 10 seconds left. The Wolverettes led all the way, 18-14 after one, 39-34 at the half, and 54-47 at the end of three, before finding themselves down 62-61 with about a minute to go. Butler called for the stall game, which the Wolverettes worked to perfection. She had told Stewart to take the last shot when the team began working the ball toward the net. As the seconds ticked away, the team made sure Stewart got the ball. With 10 seconds left, she stepped forward and swished a 10-footer to give the Wolverettes a 63-62 lead. The Ladycats failed to get a play set and take a shot once they brought the ball inbounds. Stewart and Culpepper led the Wolverettes with 21 each, while Hines scored 15, including three treys. Walker led Hope with 20. The Wolverettes lost their conference opener to DeQueen Friday night in double overtime. Scores and statistics for the game were unavailable as Butler's office at PHS had been broken into. The Wolverettes will be playing in the Prescott Christmas Tournament Dec. 28-29.
