Cubettes Are Now 9-2; Post Impressive Wins

Published Wednesday, December 20, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's junior girls basketball team boasts a 9-2 overall record, with some impressive wins.

The Cubettes fell against league rival Nashville when they were edged by the Lady Scrappers 30-28, Thursday, Dec. 14. The Cubettes were without the help of Traci Graham, who couldn't play because of semester tests. Graham is one of the team's leading scorers.

However, the Cubettes opened the game with a 9-5 lead in the first quarter, but found themselves trailing 15-13 at the break. The two squads were deadlocked at 21-21 when the third period came to an end, with Prescott being outscored by Nashville 9-7 in the final stanza.

Melissa Beavert paced the Cubettes with 11 points, while Jessica Hendrix added eight.

Anderson led Nashville with 12 in the game.

The Cubettes netted four of 10 from the stripe in an uncharacteristic shooting slump, while Nashville connected on two of three.

Beavert, Hendrix and Kamori Scott all pulled down seven board to keep the Cubette victory alive. Stacy Stockton fouled out with two and a half minutes to go in the contest.

Prior to the Nashville game, however, the Cubettes routed Blevins 43-26, again without Graham, who had finals.

Prescott opened the contest with an 8-6 lead in the first and pulled to a 20-16 lead at the half. The Cubettes widened the margin at the end of three with a 30-22 advantage.

Stacy Stockton led all scorers with 22 in the outing, while Beavert netted nine.

Jennifer White paced Blevins with 17.

Hendrix ripped down 10 boards, while Stockton pulled down nine and had six steals.

The Cubettes swished nine of 15 free throws, while the Lady Hornets were four of five.

In a game penciled in at the last minute, the Cubettes smacked the Lady Bullpups of Saratoga 25-17 on Dec. 5.

Graham and Stockton both played sick, but led the team with nine and seven points respectively.

The Cubettes had a narrow 12-11 win at the end of one, and posted a 16-11 lead at the break. They pulled to a 22-13 advantage by the end of three as the Prescott defense stiffened.

Vaughn led Saratoga with five points.

Stockton was still a force on the boards, as she pulled down 12 rebounds, with Beavert facing theft charges for her five steals.

The Cubettes were again cold at the stripe, as they hit four of 10. The Lady Pups, however, were no better with their three for 10 outing.

Monday, Dec. 4, was the first time the Cubettes tasted defeat during the season. Stockton and Graham were both out sick as Prescott invaded Arkadelphia and was handed a 48-28 whipping.

Though the team played well, it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Beavers. Arkadelphia led 15-6 after one, was up 24-13 at the half, and posted a 33-24 lead at the end of three.

Scott and Hendrix led the Cubettes with 10 each, while Hendrix had 11 rebounds and Scott added eight.

Ashley Anthony led all scorers with 23 for Arkadelphia, including five three-pointers.

The Cubettes were four of 11 from the charity stripe, while Arkadelphia was four of six.

Before the Arkadelphia game, the Cubettes sliced through the opposition in the Blevins Junior Invitational Tournament Nov. 25 through Dec. 2.

They opened the tourney by pounding Gurdon 39-13, with the bench being cleared as everyone got to play.

Stockton led all scorers with 25 points, while Graham netted 10.

In game two, the Cubettes edged the Lady Scrappers 34-33.

This time, Graham led the Cubettes with 14, while Stockton ripped the cords for 13.

Free throws played a key part in the game as Prescott canned 10 of 12 and Nashville hit three of four.

Nevada was the final victim in the tourney as the Cubettes posted a 34-25 win and bragging rights in Nevada County.

Again, it was the Stockton and Graham show as they scored 14 and 10 respectively. Scott dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, while Stockton added 11 and Leslie Grimes had seven.

Prescott's eighth grade fell victim to Arkadelphia 26-10. The bright spot was Sunshine Kelley's eight points in the contest. Roundball action is over for the junior girls until 1996. They open the new year Jan. 5 with a trip to Saratoga.
