Pedestrian Critical After U.S. 371 Accident Monday Night

Published Wednesday, December 20, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Two accidents were reported Monday in the city of Prescott which caused one from each accident to be transported to the hospital.

D.L. McRae was transported to the hospital with reported chest pains after his vehicle was struck on East Main Monday afternoon.

According to Prescott Police Chief Willie Latin, McRae apparently turned left in front of vehicle driven by Jeff Baker. Both men are Prescott residents.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged, and taken to body shops.

The second accident resulted in a pedestrian being struck on U.S. 371 near exit 44 at Interstate 30.

C.D. Flemons was traveling north on U.S. 371 in a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird when he struck Split Rail resident Johnny Breuster.

Witnesses at the scene said Breuster, who often walked across the road, tried to outrun the vehicle and ran into its path. Flemons stated he did not see Breuster.

Others at the scene say several residents often walk along the highway and several other accidents have been avoided in the past when vehicles swerved into the truckstop parking lot and into ditches.

In the past police have responded to the area to remove residents from the road, say officials.

Flemons, who is 17 -- and an all district football player and junior at Prescott High School -- was transported to the Nevada County Sheriff's office for a breathalyzer test at the request of Arkansas State Police officer Dave Fullen.

Flemons, who had not been drinking, was not charged in the accident and cleared of any wrong doing at the scene. His vehcile did suffer extensive damage to the hood and windshield.

Breuster was transported to Wadley Hospital and reported to be in critical condidition early Tuesday morning. Police also report Breuster was wearing dark clothing and the area was darkened due to the misting rainfall.
