Harassment Alleged Against Councilman

Published Wednesday, December 27, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Divorce has not helped one local couple settle their differences.

One is accusing the other of sending harassing communications and costing them a job in the process.

Harassing Communications, by law, is a class A misdemeanor with a penalty of up to one year in jail and/or a fine of no more than $1,000.

According to Municipal Court records, Lisa Crow has filed charges of harassing communications against her ex-husband, Steve Crow, who is a member of the Prescott City Council and a coach at Prescott Middle School.

The documents show an arrest warrant for Mr. Crow was issued Nov. 30.

The former Mrs. Crow alleges her ex-husband is harassing her and her family with written communications. These include letters and clippings from various newspapers which reported Lisa Crow's earlier problems with the justice system.

Ms. Crow, in the file, states she lost a job at Hospitality Care Center in Arkadelphia because of a letter allegedly sent by her ex-husband.

Local authorities have investigated the situation. No comment is available as the case is ongoing and open.

However, court records show Ms. Crow claiming to recognize the printing in letters sent to her as that of her former husband, Steve.

She has provided copies of the letters and clippings she has received to the authorities, along with samples of Steve's handwriting.

When questioned by officers, Mr. Crow claimed he is not the one sending the letters and alleges he has received similar letters himself.

The contents of many of the letters, the file contains, are personal attacks on Ms. Crow for leaving Steve. They allege he did not want the divorce, and she was wrong for pressing the issue.

Other letters state she is hiding behind her father, Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor, for protection and to keep from spending time in jail.

The letter he claimed to receive is identical to one she showed authorities, with a few basic exceptions. First, both are typed and contain a great many misspelled words. However, while hers has "him" and "his" when referring to her ex-husband, the one he showed officers has "him" and "his" crossed out and the words "you" and "your" printed in above them.

The court records also show a copy of the municipal court docket with all names but hers crossed out, and the shoplifting charge highlighted.

Ms. Crow is represented by Travis Berry of the Arkadelphia law firm of Wright, Chaney, Berry and Daniel.
