PHS Splits Christmas Tournament

Published Wednesday, January 3, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's senior girls took two gams in the Prescott Christmas Tournament last week, while the boys fell twice.

The Curley Wolves opened the tourney falling 53-46 to the Wickes Warriors.

Dierks' senior girls faltered and succumbed to Lakeside in the second game with the final score 61-52.

The Blevins Hornets handled Lakeside's senior boys with a 79-65 score in the third game, played Thursday, Dec. 28, 1995.

In Thursday's final contest, the Wolverettes dropped the Lady Hornets of Blevins 54-45. The Wolverettes played the game without the benefit of Ashlea Stewart, who had the flu.

Gladys Gulley paced the Wolverettes with 29 points, while Jessica Hildebrand contributed 16 to the win.

Laura Culpepper had seven assists and five rebounds, while Amber Arney ripped down 13 boards and had three assists.

The Wolverettes were 16 of 21 from the stripe, with Hildebrand netting 10 of 12 and Gulley canning five of six.

Friday's action opened with the Lakeside Lady Rams whipping the Lady Hornets 76-66.

The Rams, in game two, escaped Delight 71-69.

In game three, the Wolverettes thumped Dierks 64-50, while the boys took it on the chin in the final game 84-54 to Blevins.

In the Dierks game, Prescott's girls were led by Lesley Hines and Culpepper, each with 19. Hines was five of seven in three point shooting. Culpepper also had four rebounds and six steals. Gulley had seven boards and three steals.

"We had another great first half," Wolverette coach Cecily Butler said of the Blevins game. "We seem to relax too much in the third quarter and allow teams to slip back up on us.

"Blevins is a good team and we were lucky to beat them again. We used our inside game and posted Gladys up inside. That was our game plan, and she came through for us.

"Strong rebounding has also been the key to several of our wins."

Overall, Butler said her team played well considering they were leg weary due to the Christmas holidays.

Talking about the Dierks game, Butler said, "We're still having the third quarter blahs. We tried to let them slip back into the game."

However, she said her squad woke up in the final period and put the Lady Outlaws out to pasture.

"Strong rebounding and a heady defense allowed another win for the Wolverettes," she said.

Currently, the Wolverettes are 10-4 on the season.

In a contest played Dec. 15 against DeQueen, the Wolverettes fell 76-74 in double overtime.

The Wolverettes held the lead for the first three quarters, being up 17-11 after one; 36-26 at the half; and 47- 43 at the end of three before allowing the Lady Leopards to tie the game in the final period.

The two squads entered the first overtime locked at 61-61, and ended it tied 65-65.

Stewart paced Prescott with 22 points, including six rebounds and four assists. Gulley netted 18 points with eight boards, while Hines ripped the cords for 16 points and was three of four in three-point shooting. Culpepper had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Butler said her team had every opportunity to win, but fell asleep in the third period.

The Prescott senior teams played Nashville Tuesday night, and will take to the court in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament in Saratoga, starting Thursday.
