Curley Cubs Open '96 With SplitPublished Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayunePrescott's junior boys opened 1996 by splitting their first two games of the year. The Curley Cubs opened the year with a 45-33 win over Nashville Jan. 2. The Cubs started the game well by taking a 13-9 advantage into the second period. At the half, they held a slim 21-17 lead. However, a strong third quarter provided the impetus for the win as the Cubs led 36-25 after three. Brandon Wilson was a force for the Cubs as he poured in 18 points, including one trey. Scott Hobbs was the next highest scorer with eight. Prescott was seven of 15 at the charity stripe for the contest. The Scrappers were paced by Willie Scott's 10 points. The Nashville crew was pitiful from the line as they hit six of 21. Game two, played Jan. 4, saw Gurdon thump the Cubs 49-31 on a cold-shooting night. The Cubs played it close in the first period, but trailed 9-7 going into the second. At the half, the Go-Devils held a 22-2 lead as the Cubs had trouble finding the bottom of the net. Prescott played better in the third period, but was unable to make up any ground as they trailed 34-19 at the end of three. Marchello Young led the Cubs with 10 points. Brandon Wilson contributed eight. It was also a horrid night at the charity stripe as the Cubs were only able to convert two of 11 chances. Gurdon was led by the twin towers of Terry Cornish and Adrian Meeks, each scoring 13. Chauncey Charles contributed 10 in the win. The Devils were a little better at the line as they hit three of seven. The Cubs aren't scheduled to hit the hardwood again until Jan. 18, when they travel to Hope for a date with the Bobkittens.
