1996 Could Be A Long Year For Curley Wolves On Basketball Court

Published Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Even though it's early, 1996 looks like it will be a long year for the Curley Wolf basketball team.

So far, the squad has dropped its first two contests of '96, and neither was close.

The Wolves opened the year falling 47-29 to Nashville on Jan. 2 at Nashville.

The boys were frigid in the opening eight minutes as they were only able to post two points. On the other hand, the Scrappers gained a measure of revenge for the double whipping they took on the gridiron, as they took an 18-2 lead into the second period.

The situation improved slightly in the second quarter, but not much, as the Wolves narrowed the gap to 23-9. By the end of three, the Prescott crew found itself down 37- 14.

No members of the Wolves reached double figures. Prescott was led by J.R. Matthews with seven.

A bright point in the game was free throw shooting as they hit five of eight.

Willie Henry and Jared McBride each canned 12 for the Scrappers.

Nashville's free throw shooting was miserable, as they only hit four of 20 attempts.

The Wolves played better in their Jan. 5 game against Saratoga, but still took it on the chin 74-51.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a 16-11 lead and were up 38-26 at the break. By the end of three, the 'Dogs held the Wolves at bay 61-40.

Barrett Yates paced the Wolves with 13 points. J.R. Matthews and Carlos Welch each added 10.

Again, the Wolves shot fairly well at the line, hitting four of nine.

The 'Dogs were led by Jason McDonald's 18. Tim Green followed with 14, while Marlon Stuart contributed 11.

The 'Dogs were consistent at the line as they hit 11 of 18.

However, Wolf coach Hal Landrith has lost several members of the team.

The Wolves are slated to play Harmony Grove Jan. 12.
