Lady Jays Off To Slow Start In '96Published Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneNevada's senior girls have opened 1996 with two close losses. After returning to class on Jan. 2, after the Christmas break the Lady BlueJays took on Lewisville's Lady Red Devils, but fell 44-39. The Lady Jays opened well, with a 10-6 first period lead, but faltered in the second quarter as the Lady Devils rallied to go up 23-18 at the break. Both squads scored eight points in the third, with the Lady Devils leading 31-26 at the end of three. The two teams also played even in the final stanza, each scoring 13 points. Dilesha Easter paced the Lady Jays with 13 points, as the only one to break the double-figure barrier. Shonda Young came close with nine. The Lady Jays had a miserable night at the stripe, as they only connected on six of 24 free throw attempts. The Lady Devils took better advantage of their free shots in swishing 10 of 18. It was the fourth quarter against the Lady Panthers of Fouke which killed the Lady Jays on Jan. 5, as they fell 46-40. Once again, the Lady Jays posted a lead in the opening period, 10-6. They faltered again in the second quarter, but stayed close at 20-19. Both teams scored eight in the third set to keep things nice and close at 28-29. However, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Jays 18-13 in the final period for the victory. Shonda Young led the Lady Jays with 10, while Easter netted nine and Shamika Allen canned eight. Free throws were even as the Lady Jays shot 10 of 20. Misty Farley had the hot hand for Fouke as she scored 19. Raynee Crabtree poured in 15. The Lady Panthers took better advantage of their free throw opportunities, though, as they sent 10 of 14 through the hoop. Along with being in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament in Saratoga, the Lady Jays played Norphlet Tuesday night, and are set to tangle with Smackover Jan. 16.
