Jr. Jays Dominating OpponentsPublished Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneTwo games into 1996 and the Nevada junior boys have blown out two opponents. The junior Jays opened the new year with a 63-17 thrashing of Lewisville on Jan. 2. For all intents and purposes, the game ended in the first quarter as Nevada held a 15-6 lead. The Jays continued the rout in the second period as they led 36-12 at the break. The third stanza was no better for the junior Red Devils, as the Nevada defense allowed only one point, while the offense poured in a dozen to lead 48-13 at the end of three. Julius Gulley paced the Jays with 15 points, while teammate Lamar Haynie poured in 12. The Jays also shot seven of 12 from the free throw line. Eddie Walker and Calvin Turner led Lewisville with four points each. The Devils were six of 10 from the stripe. The junior Jays were no kinder to Fouke on Jan. 5, as they manhandled the Panthers 52-20. Once again, the Jays were out of the gate at a gallop as they took a first quarter lead of 24-5. The team slowed to a walk in the second leg, but still led 30-9 at the half. In the third period, the squad sped back up to a trot as they led 43-13, and sprinted home in the final furlong. Again, Gulley was the leading scorer as he tickled the nylon for 17 points. Derrick Bell followed suit with 10 points as the only other member of the team to reach double figures. The biggest problem the Jays had was at the charity stripe as they were only four of 12. Blake Crabtree paced the Panthers with nine points. Fouke was three of five at the stripe. Nevada's junior boys played Norphlet at Nevada Tuesday night and were scheduled to take on Emerson Jan. 16. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
