On Selling Hospital Facility If Approval Given By Voters In Tuesday's Election

Published Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Nevada County's Quorum Court met in its regular meeting Monday night with little to discuss.

JPs discussed computers briefly because the time is near to purchase the books used in offices.

The books would be replaced by the computers and are fairly expensive, according to officials.

Another meeting between the computer committee and officials will be set up to discuss the computers, and getting two to four offices hooked up on a compatible system.

JPs also were given some ideas on how to handle the sale of the former Nevada County Hospital building, assuming voters approve the sale of the building in an election Tuesday.

Jim Sharkey, executive director of the Nevada County Economic Development Office, told the justices with the hospital being a specifically designed building it could be hard to sell the structure for industrial purposes.

Although Sharkey did say there were two to three different people or companies willing to bid on the building.

Law will require the county judge sell the building for at least 75 percent of the appraised value and bids will have to be taken.

Nevada County Judge John William Barham told the JPs they will need to decide how to divide the property up to sell.

The single largest piece of property in the lot has the hospital building on it. Another section has the administrator's residence, while a third is where the Nevada County Ambulance Service is located.

In addition, the Nevada County Health Unit sits on a section of land right next to the defunct hospital. This piece of property is not for sale in the deal, when and if it occurs.

However, the walking track nearby is for sale. It, too, is owned by the county.

In addition Barham said the JPs will need to decide what to do with the medical records stored at the facility, should voters decide to sell and a buyer be found.
