Youth Earns Coon Title

Two Gurdon youth members of the Whelen Spring Coon Club competed in the National Youth Championship for coon hunting and one claimed the title in Aurora, Kentucy.

Matt Dickerson, a seventh grader from Gurdon Middle School, won the championship with his dog, Lacy, a Bluetick breed. Dickerson, son of James and Kim Dickerson, ranks in the national top twenty and is a state point leader.

Toby Childres, an eleventh grader from Gurdon High School entered the championship with his dog, No Lie Eli, a Walker breed. Childres is a regional qualifier and is the son of Don Childres and Ram Hafcot.

Joy Dog Food congratulates these young hunters on their excellent skills and good sportsmanship. Thirty-one hunters from 12 states participated in the competition.

Joy Dog Food created the National Youth Championship in cooperation with the Professional Kennel Club in 1981. More than $3000,000 has been awarded or is available towards college scholarships for qualified youth hunters.
