Gurdon Voters Say 'No' To Tucker's Highway Bill

Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker's highway proposal issue failed miserably in Clark County.

Proposition 1, which was to allow the state to pass a $3.5 billion bond issue failed 2,845 to 387 in the county.

The second measure, which would have increased the tax on diesel and gasoline fuels, went down to defeat 2,820 to 422 in the Jan. 9 special election.

The results in the Gurdon area were no closer. Overall, for the bond issue, there were 45 favoring it and 621 voting against it. On the fuel tax measure, the numbers showed 45 for and 619 against.

Breaking the results down by box, Gurdon general, for the bond issue showed seven for and 170 against. On the tax, there were eight for and 169 against.

Dealing with the bond issue first, there were 4 for in Ward 1 and 72 against; Ward 2 -- 4 for and 22 against; Ward 3 -- 3 for and 46 against; Ward 4 -- 2 for and 37 against; Ward 5 -- 12 for and 75 against; Ward 6 -- 5 for and 41 against; Vaden -- 0 for and 14 against; Whelen Spring inside -- 1 for and 11 against; Whelen Spring outside -- 0 for and 41 against; Beirne -- 3 for and 22 against; Oakland -- 0 for and 34 against; Okolona City -- 3 for and 19 against; and Okolona General -- 1 for and 17 against.

On the fuel sales tax issue, there were 8 for in Ward 1 and 169 against; Ward 2 -- 3 for and 23 against; Ward 3 -- 3 for and 45 against; Ward 4 -- 1 for and 38 against; Ward 5 -- 13 for and 75 against; Ward 6 -- 5 for and 40 against; Vaden -- 0 for and 14 against; Whelen Spring inside -- 1 for and 11 against; Whelen Spring outside -- 0 for and 41 against; Beirne -- 2 for and 22 against; Oakland -- 1 for and 34 against; Okolona City -- 3 for and 18 against; and Okolona general -- 1 for and 17 against.
