Wolverettes Defeat Nashville, SaratogaPublished Wednesday, January 17, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneNashville and Saratoga have felt the wrath of the Prescott Wolverettes recently. As the season gets to the point all games count, the Prescott senior girls are taking no prisoners. In non-conference action against Nashville, the Wolverettes posted a 61-57 win. Prescott opened the game by taking a 14-11 lead at the end of the first period. however, they trailed at the half by a point at 29-28. The third quarter has been a problem area for the Wolverettes all season, and this game was no different. The Lady Scrappers extended their lead to 44-38. But the Wolverettes woke up in the final eight minutes, stiffened their defense and chalked up another win as they outscored their arch-rivals 23-13 in the fourth. Laura Culpepper sparked Prescott with 24 points, had four assists and connected on 10 of 13 free throw attempts. Jessica Hildebrand and Ashley Stuart each scored 12 in the game. Stuart also pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out four assists. The Wolverettes were 11 of 15 from the charity stripe. Latoya Pugh led the Lady Scrappers with 23. The Nashville crew went to the line 20 times, but only managed to sink 11. From there, the Wolverettes dropped Saratoga's Lady Bulldogs 60-55. In this contest, the Prescott quintet took command early and continued to hold the lead throughout. The Wolverettes opened with a 23-12 advantage and went to the lockers at the half after a cold shooting second period 29-23. The team rallied in the third to take a 41-33 lead and fought off the Lady 'Dogs in the final eight minutes. Culpepper was again the sparkplug for the team with 18 points, including six of eight free throws and nine boards. Gladies Gulley added 16 points, while Leslie Hines tickled the cords for 12 and Hildebrand rounded out the scoring with 10, including being four of five at the line. Stuart dished out four assists and had seven rebounds. The Wolverettes were 10 of 15 at the line, while Saratoga was nine of 16. The Lady 'Dogs were led by Lacy's 29. The Wolverettes returned to conference action Tuesday night against Gurdon. They had something to prove in this game as the Lady Devils beat them earlier this season in Gurdon.
